Idaho offers the following Independent Study Course options:
1.  Hunter Education
  • Workbook Option
  • Internet Option
2.  Bowhunter Education
  • Internet Option

These options are designed for self-motivated students with good reading and comprehension skills who have some firearms and hunting knowledge or experience. They are not recommended for students under 14 years of age. We suggest they participate in a traditional classroom course where they will receive instruction from certified instructors.

Students must be at least 10 years old to be tested and certified in the Independent Study Courses.


Required Field Day / Availability

Independent Study Course options require the completion of a 6-7 hour ISC specific field day.

  • Students must register in advance by checking online or with a regional office to attend the required field day.
  • Cost for Field Day materials is $8.00 payable online, at a regional office or at the Field Day exercise.
  • Notice: ISC Field Day availability may be limited at certain times of the year. Please be sure it is being offered in your area by checking online or with a regional office before starting either ISC option (workbook or internet).
  • Hunter or Bowhunter Internet Course Option students need to provide their course completion certificate number to register. The certificate will be required to attend the field day.
  • Hunter Education Workbook Option students must present their completed workbook to the instructor prior to, or at, the field day.

Hunter Education Field Day: Includes a review of course topics, Idaho hunting regulations, ethics, conservation, a firearm safety field exercise, a live-fire exercise and a sixty question written final exam.

Bowhunter Education Field Day: Includes a review of course topics, Idaho hunting regulations, the safe handling of equipment, shot placement and game recovery techniques, treestand safety, wildlife management and conservation, and a written final examination.




Hunter Education

Workbook Option
  • Students must complete a 40-page workbook that requires verification by an approved instructor to be eligible to attend the required ISC Field Day.
  • To obtain the required workbooks, student manuals, materials and specific instructions and to register for this option, contact your regional office.
  • Students must complete the workbook prior to attending the required field day.

Internet Option
  • Students must have an adequate computer, printer (to print completion certificate) and Internet access.
  • Students must complete the internet course and Pre-Certification Exam to attend the required ISC field day. Upon successful completion of this exam, students must be able to print a certificate of course completion that is required for admittance to the field day.
  • The Hunter Education Course examination fee for the Pre-Certification Exam and certificate is $15.00 which is paid directly, online, to the Internet Option provider.
  • Students must complete the internet course prior to registering for a field day. The Internet course exam certificate number must be entered to complete the field day registration process.

Bowhunter Education

Internet Option
  • Students must have an adequate computer, printer (to print completion certificate) and Internet access.
  • Students must complete the internet course and Pre-Certification Exam to attend the required ISC field day. Upon successful completion of this exam, students must be able to print a certificate of course completion that is required for admittance to the field day.
  • The Bowhunter Education Course examination fee for the Pre-Certification Exam and certificate is $20.00 which is paid directly, online, to the Internet Option provider.
  • Students must complete the internet course prior to registering for a field day. The Internet course exam certificate number must be entered to complete the field day registration process.
