MK Nature Center - Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers reworking garden beds in the Spring.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the MK Nature Center. We have many opportunities for you to donate your time and talents. Notably, the Nature Center would not be what it is today without the help of countless volunteers.

General Volunteer Positions

  1. Gardener: Duties include planting, weeding, weed pulling, pruning, working in the butterfly and hummingbird garden and other landscaping duties.

  2. Building Host: Our building hosts provide customer service at our front desk and gift shop. Hosts greet our visitors, provide information and maps, and operate the gift shop.
    A 6 month commitment is requested for this position.

  3. Administrative Assistant: We are always in need of additional administrative assistance. Duties include data base entry, direct mailings, and general office duties, include prepping education materials as needed.

  4. Eagle Scout Projects: The Nature Center welcomes Eagle Scout projects. We maintain an ongoing list of possible projects. We can accept up to four Eagle Scout projects a year. In keeping with the purpose of the Eagle Scout program, the candidate is expected to take the lead on the project.
    Interview and project review is by appointment only.

  5. Businesses and Civic Groups : We gladly accept groups up to 20 individuals for outdoor work projects. We require a minimum of 3 weeks’ notice of a requested date, and project days may be weather dependant.

  6. Youth Volunteers: We have many opportunities for students to complete community service for school projects or personal interest. We request that volunteers under age 14 have adult participation during volunteer service. Special events are a great way to volunteer as a youth.

  7. Teacher - Interpreter: Duties may include conducting wildlife programs and providing tours of the Nature Center for a variety of customers. Programs are conducted Tuesday through Friday at 9:00 am, 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. Guides are needed year-round. We provide all of the information and training.
    A three month commitment is requested after training.

  9. Event Support Staff: The Nature Center needs volunteers with a variety of talents to provide educational events for the public. Some of our events are labor-intensive and rerequre varying degrees of assistance with set up and break-down, customer service, educational activities and photographic documentation.
