2012 Waterfowl Seasons and Rules

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

September 2012 through March 2013.
Includes seasons for Wilson's Snipe and American Coot.

Please Note: There has been a change to the hunting methods allowed for light geese.

No persons shall take migratory game birds:
  • With a shotgun of any description capable of holding more than three shells, unless it is plugged with a one-piece filler, incapable of removal without disassembling the gun, so its total capacity does not exceed three shells.
  • By the use or aid of recorded or electrically amplified bird calls or sounds, or recorded or electrically amplified imitations of bird calls or sounds.

However, these restrictions do not apply during:
    • A light-goose-only season (greater and lesser snow geese and Ross' geese) when all other waterfowl and crane hunting seasons, excluding falconry, are closed.
These exceptions would apply to the light goose seasons in Idaho that occur in areas 2 and 3 from February 16, 2013 – March 10, 2013.

Federal regulations which apply to migratory bird hunting are found in Title 50, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 20. They are available here: Federal Waterfowl Rules.

Please Note: Two closures for the light goose seasons were accidently omitted from page 11 of the 2012 Waterfowl Seasons and Rules brochure.

  • Area 3 Closures: Fort Boise and Payette River WMAs and that portion of the Roswell Marsh Wildlife Habitat Area south of State Highway 18, and the Snake River Islands Unit of the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge in the Southwest Region will be closed during the spring light goose season from February 16, 2013 – March 10, 2013.
  • Area 4 Closures: Fremont and Teton counties are closed during the fall light goose season from October 13, 2012 – January 25, 2013.
